The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has been constituted by the Ministry
of Health & Family Welfare with a stringent visualisation to implement FSS act on food
business activities. FSSAI was formed to keep a single point of contact for all the food
operators. The role & responsibility of FSSAI is to make sure that all food related laws
are being followed by food business operators.
FSSAI has defined a common procedure for all food operators to apply for applicable food License.
FSSAI license/registration has three categories. An FBO can identify the required license
type basis on its business category & turnover.
FSSAI License can be divided into two categories State level License and Central License. Hotel, Restaurant and medium size food manufacturers are covered under State license. Large size food manufacturers come under Central licensing.
A separate FSSAI Registration or License required and issued for each location where food is handled. Therefore, an entity may have to obtain multiple FSSAI licenses if it operates multiple locations.
Petty retailer, hawker, itinerant vendor or a temporary stallholder or small scale or cottage or such other industries relating to food business or tiny food business operator are exempt from obtaining FSSAI Registration or License.
Once a FSSAI License is issued, it is valid for one or two years. Before end of its validity, the license can be renewed for a further term based on the requirements of the business.
Every Food or business operator having turnover of less than 12 Lakh per annum must obtain registration certificate with Food safety and standards authority of India, more precisely given below in the table.
Every Food or business operator having turnover of more than 12 Lakh per annum must obtain State License from FSSAI.
Every food operators has to take a Central License for their Head office if they have operations in addition to one state, Every Importer, importing food items including food ingredients and additives for commercial use, Every Food or business operator having turnover of more than 20 crore per annum must obtain Central License with Food safety and standards authority of India.
